Protected Property Spotlight: Sandy Valley Road "Hunnewell"

At the end of Sandy Valley Road, just before the Lowell Woods parking lot, a Westwood Land Trust sign marks four acres of protected forest and wildlife habitat.

The property was once part of the land where brothers Jim, Ogden and Bob Hunnewell grew up. After inheriting it from their parents, the brothers placed a conservation restriction on the parcel and donated it to the Town of Westwood in March 2003.

The gift was made in honor of their parents, James and Eleanor Hunnewell, longtime Westwood residents. Although the brothers no longer live in town, they wanted to help preserve the open space and rural character that defined the Westwood of their childhood.

Today, the protected parcel complements neighboring Lowell Woods and ensures that this corner of Westwood will remain forested for generations to come.
