303 Grove Street has been one of the most beautiful views in Westwood for over 80 years. Sadly, this historic estate was foreclosed on last September and the new owner thought that he would have to demolish the home and sell the land as 7 separate house lots. The property had been on the market for several years. On the day that the demolition truck parked near the house, a concerned neighbor was able to convince the owner to meet with the Westwood Land Trust and others interested in saving the property.
From those initial meetings emerged a plan to save 2 lots on the corner of Grove and Summer Street and the estate house from development. Under this new plan, the 4.17-acre estate house lot will be preserved forever as one single residence, and the two lots on the corner of Grove and Summer Street will remain as open fields forever. This plan preserves the beautiful view that we all love by keeping 8.13 acres with one single family residence rather than 4 separate houses.
Westwood Land Trust has the two lots under agreement and needs to raise an additional $290,000 by the end of August in order to complete the purchase. A private Westwood family has agreed to purchase the estate house lot and restrict it from two building lots to one single family residence. The preservation of the two Grove Street lots is contingent upon the estate lot being preserved and vice versa.
